no US release date yet. opens in UK on feb 6.

from looking at the stills on IMDB, the costumes look great. IMDB also has the trailer in a better resolution than google.

i want to see a well done fantasy movie. "the golden compass" and narnia films were soulless to me. they simply didn't hold my interest at all as they came across as very flat.

Ooh, that does look pretty nifty.

I feel ya about Narnia and Golden Compass. They were plenty flashy, but they just felt completely... yeah, soulless, exactly, actually.

i did like "stardust". it had some soul. i don't think it did as well as it should have. even though the scene and character was expanded from the book, i loved de niro's character, captain shakespeare!

my fingers are crossed that this new flick will make it here in short order. i went browsing other sites to read about the story, production, etc. i think it has promise.

I thought Stardust was okay, but I thought Claire Daines was an absolutely awful choice for the role, and also, because they adapted from the graphic novel rather than the original book, pretty much all of my favorite parts from the book were gone because they hadn't made it into the GN in the first place. :( My absolute favorite subplot from the book was gone, and that hurt.

So I was bummed in some regards, and really enjoyed it in others. Very mixed feelings overall though. I haven't bought it on DVD; I guess I'm just too bummed about my super-duper-favoritestestest part of the book being gone. DeNiro was pretty hilariously awesome though. Ricky Gervais was great too.

It's been a while since a fantasy movie really did it for me like the classics. :( MirrorMask was neat, but it really shows its low-budget roots on repeat viewings once you start noticing all the cheats and whatnot, so it's hard to hold up to stuff like Legend or Ladyhawke in the long-run, or even the older classics like Clash of the Titans or Jason and the Argonauts. Before that, my most recent favorite was a Japanese movie called Onmyoji. I still love it very much (and its sequel, which managed to be pretty good even though it wasn't quite as good as the first one). It's rad. Let me know if you'd be interested in a copy, I'll burn it for you. :)

I remember reading a review for The Other Boleyn Girl a while ago that called the opulent-but-soulless period movie "the empty dress film." The actors, the story, the world, none of it is compelling. All you can do is sit there going "Ooh, what a pretty dress!" for two hours, because it might as well just be an empty dress being wheeled around on a mannequin. Recent fantasy movies kinda feel the same. The costuming may be awesome and the budget may be huge, but you just can't fake the heart and soul of the story.

i love "ladyhawke". i have seen it a few times and never tire of it.

hmmm... yeah, 'the empty dress film' is a very apt description of "the other boleyn girl". i watched it in the theatre with some hollywood costumers when it was released. the story doesn't stick to you. there is nothing to take away from it.

as for "stardust" i bought the comic(?) series when it was originally released by vertigo because gaiman couldn't find a publisher. i loved it! yes, the movie lacked many bits from it that they should have left. i didn't care for claire danes either. she didn't fulfill my imagining of the star. however, if you take the movie as its own entity separate from being an adaptation of a book it is entertaining.

much like LoTR films left out huge, huge portions of the written trilogy.

looks neat. I loved Bridge to Terabithia so hopefully this will be as well done (same director).

Aww...I liked Narnia. But I'm easily entertained.

What...there is an actually Stardust book? Not just GN?

*gasps and heads to amazon*

"stardust" was originally released as four issues the size of a comic book graphic novel. gaiman and vess couldn't find a publisher because it is a heavily illustrated story that isn't a comic, but isn't a novel either.

since vertigo was publishing "sandman" with gaiman at the time, they were willing to publish the series in a comic bound format.

after its success it has been released as a hardback book as well as a graphic novel.
